How One Viral Video Inspired this 11 Year old Girl to Help Hundreds of Homeless People


One of Chris Hooley’s favorite ways to pass the time on hot, Arizona summer days with his 11-year-old daughter Kaylee is to skim their social media news feeds for the latest viral videos. When he came across TrueStoryASA’s YouTube video “Make The Homeless Smile – Worldwide” last year, he knew he couldn’t wait to share his find with her. But he had no idea how much it would inspire her next steps.

13 Year old Girl Collects Thousands of shoes for Homeless


For 13-year-old McClain Hermes, the inspiration to impact her world began in 2009, after her father showed her a magazine article about a shoe recycling program. “We decided (that instead of) recycling them, we would collect them and give them to people that needed them,” she says.
And with that, Shoes for the Souls was born and delivered 365 pairs of shoes that first year.
In the five years since, the Georgia teen and her father, Matt Hermes, have collected about 10,000 pairs of shoes for an Atlanta homeless shelter.
