Wendy’s Wonderful Kids
Hey everyone, I just read this create article about the Dave Thomas Foundation giving $7.5 million dollars to the city of New York to increase the number of recruiters to help find permanent homes for older and special needs kids in foster care.
It says that there are about 1,300 children who are 9 years old and older and those with special needs who are available for adoption. There were only 2 recruiters for this population and they want to increase the number to 43. The city will also commit another $3.8 million to the effort, which is supposed to run for 3 years.
Wendy’s Wonderful Kids is a project of the Columbus, Ohio based Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption established by the later founder of Wendy’s fast food restaurants, who was adopted.
According to Rita Soronen, President and Chief Executive of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the adoption rate for children who have been in the foundation’s program is around 54% nationally. New York City’s placement rate for the same population is around 34%.
Currently there are more than 110,000 children waiting to be adopted across the U.S., with about 9,000 in New York City.
What a great effort by Dave Thomas Foundation, to find real homes for these kids, instead of having them stay in foster care!!
