Stamp Out Hunger Day
The 2nd Saturday in May is the largest one-day food drive in the Nation.
It occurs in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the country and the food is collected by mail carriers. As they deliver your mail on Saturday, they also pick up non-perishable food donations that are left in mailboxes.
Over the last 20 years, over 1 Billion pounds of food has been collected, which is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
It started as a pilot program in October 1991 in 10 cities across the U.S. But due to its success, it was moved to the springtime when Food Banks struggle to meet the demand, as donations dwindle after the holiday season.
If you are interested in volunteering, call your local post office to see how you can help to sort food this Saturday. And don’t forget to fill your mailbox with yummy food for the postman.
